Description

53 Payne's Hill is a late 17th to early 18th century building located on a corner site with Culver Street. It is two storeys high, with an attic and cellar, constructed of brick with an ashlar stone base and ashlar quoins. The building features a moulded brick string at the first floor level, a heavy moulded and modillioned eaves cornice, and a hipped old tile roof.

There are three hipped dormer windows with moulded cornices and early 19th-century casements. The first floor has four windows, one of which is blocked, while the ground floor has three windows and a door. There are also three small cellar windows. All windows on the first and ground floors have later architrave frames, and the glazing bars have been removed.

The door, located under the second window from the right, is a six-panelled door with a rectangular fanlight featuring an arched, radiating, and curved glazing pattern. This door is framed by panelled pilasters that support carved acanthus scroll brackets, with a bed mould carried around. A small cornice and moulded pediment have been removed, and there are three moulded stone steps leading up to the door.

On the elevation facing Culver Street, there are two windows on each floor, with the left-hand windows being dummy. No 53 is part of a group with Nos 88 to 107 (odd) on Invicta Terrace, Culver Street.
