Description

West House is a late 18th-century building located on the north side of West Street in Warminster. It stands three storeys tall and is constructed of coursed rubble on a projecting plinth, featuring a plain string course at the first floor level. The building has rusticated ashlar quoins, a moulded stone cornice, and a plain parapet with coping. The windows are glazing bar sash windows, with three 4-pane wide windows on the upper floors, all surrounded by stone architraves. On the ground floor, there are two 5-light windows with similar surrounds and a tall central six-panel door set in an arched stone surround, which features fluted archivolts and a keystone, with fluting extending across the door head. Above the door, there is a broken stone cornice and an open pediment supported by flat fluted scroll brackets, along with a radiating and wreathed arched fanlight.

To either side of the house, there are one-storey extensions made of stone, with an old tile roof on the right and a slated roof with a tall brick chimney on the left. The house is set back from the road, enclosed by a screen of spearhead rails and urn-topped standards, positioned between two stone piers and curved stone side walls. At the rear, the building has two storeys, featuring a three-light mullion and transom window to the left on the first floor, and a central segmental-headed window dating from around 1720, complete with a keystone. The rear also includes a moulded stone plinth and cornice, as well as a doorway with a segmental head.

Inside, there is a vaulted cellar and an oak staircase with an uncut string decorated with guttae. The staircase has two decorated balusters per tread, a curled bottom, and a different stair pattern on the second floor.
