Description
The Wheatsheaf Inn is a late 17th century building located on the north side of Westgate. It is a low, two-storey house featuring a steep pantile roof, which is possibly brick covered with roughcast. The inn has a painted legend stating 'Established 1627'. There are three late windows on both floors, with sliding sashes, and one hung sash on the ground floor. The plain doorway has a segmental arch and a four-panel door.
Attached to the inn is an 18th century, three-storey brick house constructed in English bond, with a modern cement tiled roof and a dentilled eaves cornice. The ground floor includes a flat archway and 19th century pilastered elements, along with modern window designs. There are two windows on the first and second floors, featuring hung sashes with glazing bars in wide wooden cases, segmental arched heads on the first floor, and flat heads on the second floor. A stringcourse is present at the second floor level, and there is a late extension at the rear. The Wheatsheaf Inn is part of a group with Nos 44 to 66 (even) and Nos 82 and 84.
