Description
No. 56 Westgate is an early 19th-century building that stands three storeys tall with a basement, constructed of red brick. The central part of the front projects slightly. There are three windows on the top two floors, featuring narrow brick voussoirs and no glazing bars, separated by stucco piers. Above these windows is a stucco entablature adorned with guttae and wreaths. The set-back portions of the front have raised stucco panels with Graeco-Egyptian raised ornament. The centre window on the first floor has an architrave surround and a cornice supported by brackets, with narrow windows on either side. The top floor window also has an architrave surround and a cill on brackets. The building is topped with a cornice and a blocking course. The entrance is set back to the side and features pilasters, an entablature, and an anthemion panel. There are good contemporary cast iron railings. This building is part of a group with Nos. 44 to 66 (even) and Nos. 82 and 84.
