Description
43 Westgate is a 18th-century, two-storey house built of brick in Dutch bond, featuring a hipped roof made of Westmorland slate. The building has five windows with hung sashes that include glazing bars, set in wide wooden cases that are almost flush with the facade. These windows have flat-arched heads and plain cills. There is a later extension at the east end that projects forward, while the original front likely had six windows. The house has coved eaves and a string course between the storeys.
Access to the entrance is via three stone steps, leading to a wooden doorcase supported by two columns and topped with a triangular pediment. The square-headed doorways feature a moulded architrave, panelled reveals, soffit, and door, all with incised panels. There is also a less prominent extension at the west end. The building is now connected to The Limes by a modern extension.
43 Westgate is part of a group that includes Nos 25, 29 to 31 (odd), Westgate House, The Limes, and Nos 43 to 47 (odd).
