Description

32 and 34 Warberry Road West are a pair of houses built in the late 1850s or early 1860s, with No. 32 converted into flats. The houses are plastered and feature a hipped asbestos slate roof, with stacks that have rendered shafts, platbands, and cornices. They are designed as a mirror-plan pair, appearing as a single building from a distance, with a double-depth layout and rear service wings at right angles.

The exterior consists of two storeys with a basement beneath the front first-floor terrace. The buildings have stuccoed quoins that are rusticated at the first floor, along with an eaves band. The front has two windows, with French windows on the ground floor and outer first-floor windows that have moulded architraves and sill blocks. No. 32 retains Venetian shutters, while both houses feature a round-headed niche at the centre of the first floor. No. 32 has replacement plastic windows.

A notable feature is the elaborate cast-iron verandah with a glazed lean-to roof at No. 34, which is very complete and includes barleysugar standards, elaborate brackets, a pierced cast-iron fascia, and a cast-iron balustrade. No. 34 also has a charming gabled glazed porch on the right return, adorned with Edwardian stained glass. The centre bay of this elevation projects forward under a gable, featuring a window with a round-headed moulded architrave and a keyblock. The interior has not been inspected but may contain interesting features.
