Description
A pair of houses, likely dating from the 1860s, were probably designed by JW Rowell as part of the development around Ellacombe Green, a project presented to the town in 1859 by Sir Lawrence Palk. The construction utilizes snecked local grey limestone rubble, with polychromatic brick and stone dressings, and a slate roof which has been replaced with asbestos. Brick stacks feature shafts.
The houses are arranged on a corner site with a mirror plan, overall in a T-shape. The principal rooms are located in the front block, which faces the street with entrances on its long outer sides. A rear wing runs at a right angle, for service areas, with further small service wings extending at the rear.
The two-storey front facade has a symmetrical design, with two gables, one on either side of a central corbelled chimney stack with four shafts. Each house has two three-light ground floor windows with cranked voussoirs and high transomed casements. Above these are two-light first-floor windows, each with a cranked brick arch and, above it, a pointed arched tympanum decorated with red brick and stone. The outer returns feature a red brick string course; a front door is situated towards the angle with the service wing, and there's a first-floor two-light casement above it. The gable ends of the service wings display polychromatic detailing and tympana.
The interior has not been inspected but it may retain features of interest. The buildings are included on the list for group value, as part of an exceptionally well-planned and designed group of mid-19th century workers' housing.
