Description

The Country House Public House is a public house built in the late 1850s. It is constructed from local grey limestone rubble with painted banding and features a slate roof, along with stacks that have either brick or rendered shafts. The building shares materials and style with the domestic structures in the surrounding area.

The main block has a deep rectangular plan and includes a rear service/stable wing that is positioned at right angles. The exterior is two storeys high with a three-to-one window arrangement on the entrance front, featuring four bays that vary in size and are topped with gables or half-hips. The right end bay is set back and has a lower roof. There are two ground-floor crank-headed windows, which are glazed with high-transomed casements. A small half-glazed verandah spans the front, supported by a lean-to roof and featuring two gables. The entrance is located at the left return of the verandah.

On the first floor, there are four crank-headed windows that are fitted with various plate-glass sashes. The left return of the building has shallow projecting chimney shafts flanking a canted bay window on the ground floor, which features a parapet and is also glazed with plate-glass sashes. Above this bay window, the eaves are gabled over a first-floor crank-headed window, which is similarly glazed. The rear includes a three-bay service wing that is styled to match the main building.

The interior has not been inspected but may contain features of interest. The Country House Public House is included as part of the Ellacombe Road development of artisan housing.
