Description
A pair of semi-detached houses, constructed around 1862-3 in Torquay. The houses have stuccoed walls with rusticated quoins and string courses, a low-pitched slate roof, and rendered end stacks. They are arranged to a double-depth plan, with service wings at the rear.
The two-storey front has two slightly projecting full-height bays, each with a low, plain bargeboarded gable. The ground-floor windows are tripartite with horizontal glazing bars in sash windows. Number 36 features paired round-headed first-floor windows divided by pilaster strips and with archivolts. Number 38 has a later 19th or early 20th-century canted wooden bay window. A wooden trellis verandah, with a trellis balustrade, extends to the two-window side walls, which have 2/2-pane sashes and glazed 19th-century entrance porches.
The interior of number 36 is largely original and includes panelled doors, a staircase with turned balusters, a newel post, and a mahogany handrail. The principal rooms have moulded ceiling cornices, with the drawing room featuring a frieze and a marble chimney piece. The entrance vestibule contains a stained glass door and overlight. The interior of number 38 was not inspected.
The buildings are included in the listing for their group value.
