Description
The White Cottage is a house located on Church Street in Hugh Town, dating from the early 19th century. It is constructed from white-washed granite rubble with quoins and features a slate roof with rendered end stacks. The building has a two-unit plan with a central staircase and stands three storeys high, presenting a symmetrical three-window facade. A trellis-work porch leads to a four-fielded-panelled door, which has a light in the fifth top panel. The windows are late 19th century three-over-three pane sashes with granite lintels above.
At the rear, there is an extension added in the 1980s. Inside, the cottage features panelled shutters set in moulded shutter boxes, as well as panelled doors also framed with moulded wood architraves. The joists are ovolo-moulded, and the room to the left contains a wood bressummer over an open fireplace, which is flanked by panelled cupboard doors set in moulded wood architraves. The property also includes coursed and dressed granite forecourt walls, making it a complete example of a 19th-century Scillonian interior.
