Description

Two houses, now a guest house, custom house, and club, were built in the early 19th century and remodelled in 1927 by Richardson and Gill for the Duchy of Cornwall estate. The exterior is constructed of coursed granite rubble, with colourwashed render and stucco, and has a hipped slate roof with rendered ridge stacks. The building has a double-depth plan and two rear wings that enclose a yard.

The two-storey facade facing Lower Strand has a three-window first-floor range. A modern plastic door and windows are present. Granite steps with iron railings and gates lead to a recessed bay on the right, featuring a 6/6-pane sash window and a 6-panelled door with glazed upper panels. The door is set within a doorcase featuring half-columns and capitals supporting a flat hood. A similar sash window is on the right return wall. Another recessed bay to the right has channelled rustication on the ground floor, a plat band, and a first floor with rusticated quoins and a bracketed cornice, all framing a horned 3/3-pane sash window. A lean-to to the right has a 6/6-pane sash window on the front and four 6/6-pane sashes on the right return wall, alongside a round window above a depiction of the Royal Arms and a door with side lights.

Inside, early 19th-century cornicing is visible, and on the first floor of Strand House, there are moulded architraves surrounding the shutters. The 1927 alterations by Richardson and Gill followed the relocation of the custom house from the rear of the Atlantic Hotel.
