Description
Penlee and the attached walls and railings to Penlee are a pair of semi-detached houses built around 1840. They are constructed from coursed and dressed granite and feature a slate roof with brick ridge and end stacks. The houses have a double-depth plan and are two stories tall with attics, each having a two-window range. R.W. Banfield has a mid-20th century shopfront, with the lintel of the original window and the arch of the door still visible. Penlee features a mid-19th century ground-floor 24-pane bowed window with a moulded architrave and cornice, along with a semi-circular arch over an eight-fielded-panelled door. The first floor has 12/12-pane sash windows, and hipped dormers with slate-hung cheeks, featuring horned 2/2-pane sashes on Penlee and a mid-20th century window on R.W. Banfield. Inside Penlee, there are panelled doors set in moulded architraves and an open-well staircase with a wreathed mahogany handrail. The subsidiary features include coursed and dressed granite walls surrounding Penlee, topped with spear-headed railings that have terminal urn finials.
