Description

The Bellrock Hotel, originally a house, dates from the early 19th century and features mid-20th century additions and external details. It is constructed of granite rubble with an aggregate render, topped with a green cement tile roof and rendered ridge and end stacks. The building has a double-depth plan and stands two storeys high with attics. The original front, which is three windows wide on the left (east), has quoins on the left and 6/6-pane sash windows. The west wing, which was raised from a single storey to two storeys in the 20th century, has two windows with 20th-century six/six-pane and 8/8-pane sashes, along with part-glazed doors set in a quoined surround, quoins to the left, and a plat band. There are also 20th-century hipped dormers with sashes.

Inside, the hotel features six fielded-panel doors set in moulded architraves, with moulded shutter boxes and architraves around the windows. A fine fanlight, possibly reset, showcases 1780s leadwork with glazed sunburst lights and an outer band of roundels adorned with florets and swags. The early 19th-century anthemion detail on one side suggests that the entire light was reused in this position, complemented by Greek revival pilasters below. The hall boasts a Vitruvian scroll and anthemion cornice, while a dog-leg staircase with a swept string, mahogany handrail, and simple turned newel posts connects the basement to the attics. A room on the east side features a simple reeded cornice, a black polished marble fireplace, long scroll brackets, and a deep shelf.

The subsidiary features include coursed and dressed granite forecourt walls topped with spear-headed railings, which are interrupted by urn finials.
