Description
The Church of St Mary is a Methodist chapel constructed in 1899 by A.J. Trenear. It is built of squared, coursed granite rubble with a slate roof. The building follows a single-vessel rectangular plan and is designed in the Early Pointed style. The west front features two two-light lancet windows on either side of a central, tripartite lancet window with wooden Y-tracery above the door, the door and tracery having been replaced in the 1980s. A gable apex bears an inscription and is topped by a roundel with a cast-iron trefoil ventilator. The side elevations have four bays, each with similar lancet windows.
Inside, the chapel is a four-bay hall with a horseshoe shape and first-floor galleries supported by cast-iron columns, incorporating angle stairs, and panelled gallery fronts. A pulpit with two staircases is also present. The ceiling is cambered, with ventilation roundels. A west window dating to around 1900 is a notable feature. The chapel remains largely unaltered and is a representative example of its period.
