Description
No. 78 Elwell Street is a house in a row, built in the early 19th century. It features coursed and squared rubble with a concrete tile roof. The building has two storeys and two windows, which include three-light mullion casements set under wood lintels. There is a central 4-panel part-glazed door from the 19th century, located in a 20th-century gabled porch. A brick stack is positioned at the left gable. The top three courses of stonework are more regular than the rest, indicating that the roof eaves may have been raised; there is no thatch remaining under the tiles.
Inside, the house has low ceilings and a narrow cross-passage with an original panelled partition on the left. The rear door is an original plank and batten. A full-width addition extends across the back. The room to the left features exposed ceiling rafters. There is a narrow winder staircase that runs transversely to the right, with a section of handrail leading to the top landing, which has a twisted newel and diagonal balusters. On the first floor to the left, there is a wide plank door and roughly wrought purlins.
