Description

Meadowsides is a detached house dating to around 1830, with additions made in the early 20th century. It is an example of a grand cottage ornée style, situated set back from Elwell Street in Upwey. The house is constructed from coursed squared Portland stone, with a thatched roof over the original central section and tiled roofs to the hipped wings. The central three-bay, two-storey range is symmetrical, flanked by lower, slightly set-back single-bay wings. All the front windows are timber casements with small panes, except for a two-light window above the central doorway, which has stone voussoirs and a central key stone. The ground floor includes French doors on either side of the central doorway, all leading into a rebuilt glazed conservatory raised on two steps. The right wing features a pair of plank garage doors. Brick gable stacks are present. A 16-pane sash window is located on the left return wall, and the rear of the building includes various extensions and some original windows. Internally, a central staircase has a solid string, stick balusters, and a mahogany rail returning over a central planked doorway at the rear. The ground floor rooms feature rough ‘pole’ beams, seemingly intended to reinforce the cottage ornée aesthetic. There are several four-panel doors within linings.
