Description
Two houses in a row, built in the early 19th century. The houses are constructed from squared and coursed Portland rubble, painted at the front, and have concrete tile roofs. Originally thatched, remnants of the thatch remain under the tiling. Each house has a rear gabled wing. Number 74 has two windows, and number 76 has three. The windows are timber casements with horizontal glazing bars and narrow mullions; the windows at number 74 are replacements. Number 74 has a part-glazed door under a 20th-century glazed porch on the left, while number 76 has a central part-glazed door within a 20th-century gabled glazed porch. A gable stack is located on the right side of number 74, and gable stacks are on each side of number 76.
The interiors of both houses have very low ceilings, with thatch remaining under the tiling. Number 74 retains stone-flag flooring at the rear, a winder stair partially enclosed by original matchboard partitioning, and original 3-light casements in the gabled wing. Number 76 features a central cross-passage, with a transverse beam extending to the room to its right. That room has a rebuilt bressumer fire with a bread-oven. The rear wing of number 76 has a stone-flagged floor and a heavy transverse beam. The collar roof has roughly hewn principals. Early engravings indicate these houses were built by 1824, but not in the late 1790s.
