Description
No. 48 Elwell Street is a house in a row, dating from the 18th century or early 19th century. It is constructed of coursed rubble and features a steeply pitched thatch roof. The building has a lofty symmetrical front block with a lower rear hipped wing, and it stands two storeys high with an attic. The facade includes two windows; a small central recessed dormer sits above three-light wood casements, which have transoms (except for the ground floor window on the right), all set beneath haunched brick segmental heads. There is a central plank door located under a 20th-century glazed porch. To the right of the door, there is an additional inserted two-light casement, which may have replaced a former doorway, suggesting that the property might have originally been two dwellings, as there is currently no No. 46. Rendered stacks are present on each gable. The interior has not been inspected.
