Description

CORFE CASTLE EAST STREET (West side) SY 96 81 8/65 British Legion House (formerly 20.11.59 listed as Old School) including boundary wall and railings GV II Former school, now British Legion Hall. Dated 1834, extended to rear before 1850. Rubblestone walls, slate roof with ornamental bargeboards. Brick stack at left end of main block. Original building of L-shaped plan, with projecting wing at right end. 2 storeys. In the wing, battened door under slightly cambered stone lintol. Date stone above this. On first floor, one casement with cast iron lattice glazing under slightly cambered stone lintol. Single-storey lean-to on left side of the wing. In main range, ledged door. Ground floor has one sash with glazing bars. First floor has 2 similar sashes. Main front boundary wall of rubble stone, with cock and hen coping. Right of this, iron railings with shaped tops and scroll brackets to gate posts (gates missing). (RCHM, Monument 12. Dorset. Vol. II).
