Description

A school building, later converted into two dwellings, dates to 1810 and has been altered since. It is constructed of sandstone ashlar with a slate roof. The building has an L-shaped layout, consisting of a three-unit main range with a wing added to the rear of the left end. The facade is symmetrical, featuring a slightly recessed central section with a shaped parapet, flanked by wider outer bays with pseudo-pediments. A first-floor band and banded rustication to the ground floor are also present. The centre has two doorways with panelled doors, overlights featuring reflected intersecting semicircular glazing bars, and side windows with glazing bars. The outer bays each have three windows at ground floor: two 12-pane sash windows to the left, two 12-pane tilting casements to the right, and a small 2-pane window between each pair. At the first floor, the centre has two 12-pane sashes, while the outer bays have large 20-pane sashes. The central parapet incorporates a tablet inscribed "BRITISH SCHOOL PUBLIC [illegible] 1810". The building was likely constructed by the British and Foreign Schools Society, established in 1808 to promote non-denominational education.
