Description

Ackworth House is a large house, now serving as a boarding house for Ackworth School. It was built in the late 18th century and enlarged in the late 19th century. The house is constructed of sandstone, with the north front rendered and coursed squared sandstone, topped with a slate roof.

The north front features a double pile plan and is three storeys high with five bays, designed in a Classical style. The façade is symmetrical, with a pedimented three-bay centre that includes a central doorway with a panelled door. This doorway is framed by Tuscan semi-columns, a triglyph frieze, and a segmental pediment, flanked by narrow side windows. To the right of the doorway is a small window, and there are two-light sashed windows on each side. The outer bays have sashes without glazing bars.

On the first floor, there are 12-pane sashes linked by a sill-band, with the central window featuring an architrave with a cornice. The second floor has low 6-pane sashes. The pediment above contains raised decoration, including a floral medallion beneath a swag and an urn at the apex. The roof is low-pitched and hipped, with two ridge chimney stacks.

At the rear, there is an added range of two storeys, which has a symmetrical south front. This features an open-pedimented centre flanked by full-height canted bays. A broad first-floor band runs around the entire structure. The centre has a large tripartite sashed window at ground level, and a tall Venetian-style window with a balustrade on the first floor. The flanking bays each have three 12-pane sashes on both floors, with raised sills and hipped roofs. The interior has not been inspected.
