Description

Lorton Farmhouse and Dairy is a farmhouse built in the early 19th century, with later additions. It features squared and coursed stone construction, a low-pitched hipped slate roof on the main building, and a hipped thatched roof on the dairy unit. The farmhouse has a symmetrical front range with a rear range connected by a wing. It is two storeys high and has three windows on the front, which include two-light wooden casements with transoms. The upper lights have pointed tracery bars on the first floor, while the ground floor has three-light casements that slightly project from the wall. These are set under a stone hipped head with stone jambs and lintels, flanking a projecting porch that has a coped gable on kneelers and a pair of plank doors beneath a stone lintel with a key. At the time of the survey, the porch did not have a roof finish.

Prominently located on the ridge are three linked octagonal stone stacks. The left side of the building is plain, and the rear features a three-light casement at eaves level. The later attached range has a slate hipped roof and includes large paired plain sash windows set in brick dressings, along with a rear stack. The lower dairy, which is attached on the right by a short section of slated roof, is two storeys high and has one window above two two-light casements behind pierced cast-iron screens. The hipped end features a three-light casement above a two-light window with a grille, and the rear has a single-storey lean-to. The interior has not been inspected.
