Description

A rectory, dating from approximately 1811-1812, with associated service wings that have been converted into separate dwellings. The main block is constructed of yellow brick in a Flemish bond pattern, with a low-pitched slate roof. The service wings are built of rubble stone with slate roofs. The main block is two storeys and a basement, with a symmetrical three-window front. The windows are predominantly tripartite sashes with 4:12:4 panes, set within segmental brick heads and Portland stone sills. The ground floor features recessed panels beneath wide elliptical brick arches, each containing a tripartite opening with 5-pane side-lights and a pair of French doors under a transom. The basement has shallow tripartite sashes under stone lintels, with a continuing stone sill from the ground floor French doors, set within small rectangular areas with railings on Portland stone copings. A central doorway consists of part-glazed doors within Doric pilasters, a transom, and a wide elliptical radial fanlight. This is sheltered by a yellow brick porch with an arched front opening. A Portland stone plinth extends to the porch. The hipped roof has flat eaves with modillions, and stacks are located on either gable and within the rear eaves to the left side. The right return has two 12-pane windows above two deeper 15-pane sashes; to the right is an additional shallow tripartite sash within an area with railings. The left return mirrors this, but with a flight of steps leading to a 20th-century basement door. The service wings are separated by a narrow courtyard. Field Cottage, to the right (east) appears in two storeys and two windows, with paired sashes; these have 9-pane windows on the first floor and 12-pane windows below, set within flat brick heads and brick jambs. It features a central 20th-century door within a small gabled porch on three steps. The gable end has a yellow brick stack and one window. Orchard Cottage, facing west, has wide 12-pane sashes to the first floor, but replacement window panes on the ground floor, and a 20th-century door on five concrete steps. The interior of the main block has not been inspected. The rectory is a handsome villa situated within generous grounds, some of which have been developed for housing.
