Description

South Mill is a former mill that has been converted into dwellings. It dates from the 18th century, with an upper floor added in 1846. The building is constructed of coursed rubble and has a slate roof. It features a plain rectangular shape with a hauling-way on the left side, which is connected by a bridge to North Mill across the street.

The exterior consists of three storeys with scattered fenestration, all featuring segmental heads with stone voussoirs. On the second floor, there is a late 19th-century gabled hauling-way with a decorative barge-board, above 20th-century glazed doors leading to the bridge, and four two-light cast-iron small-pane casements. The first floor has a pair of glazed doors that open to a 20th-century balcony railing, flanked by similar cast-iron casements and a wooden casement to the right. The ground floor has three closely set iron casements to the left of a plank door with a glazed panel, and to the right, there are two wide openings above 20th-century garage doors. A brick stack, shared with the adjoining Millstream Cottage, is located on the right side. The rear of the building has a series of regular openings with segmental heads, but these have plain casements.

Although the interior was not inspected, it is noted that this building originally served as stables for the main mill building opposite, North Mill. It was raised in the mid-19th century to become another mill unit. The River Wey is culverted beyond the right gable. South Mill is an important part of the street, retaining its original cast-iron casements on the street front and serving as a reminder of the area's former industrial activity by the River Wey.
