Description
North Mill is a former mill that has been converted into dwellings. It features some 18th century work but underwent significant extensions, including the addition of floors in 1846 and 1887, along with interior remodelling in the late 20th century. The building is constructed of squared coursed stonework and has slate roofs.
The exterior is divided into two parts. The left section has four storeys and two windows, all of which are late 20th century replacements set in original flush stone surrounds on stone sills. The ground floor includes a large garage opening with a concrete lintel. The gables are coped, and there is a large late 20th century window at the third-floor level on the left return. A stone panel high in the wall displays 'RH & F LUCKHAM 1887' in raised sans-serif lettering.
To the right is a lower range with three storeys and four windows, all late 20th century replacements in original openings featuring segmental voussoirs and wood sills. In the second bay, there is a glazed door with a sidelight, while the third bay has a large gabled dormer, which was formerly a hauling way, inscribed with the date 'Garnet-Jones 1966', above a glazed door leading to a timber footbridge that crosses to South Mill. The right return has three 2-light uPVC windows and a blocked doorway. A low link building connects to the Old Mill House, featuring a low door and a second door accessed by a flight of nine stone steps. This section has a stone panel with 'JH TIZARD 1846' in raised serif lettering.
The interior has been completely modified and retains no machinery. The mill, along with South Mill across the road, is an important feature in the street and serves as a reminder of the area's former industrial activity by the River Wey, which runs culverted under the left-hand end of the building.
