Description
The Old Manor House is a house, now used as a residential home, largely dating from the 1850s, but incorporating earlier fabric. It is constructed of coursed squared stone with dressed flush quoins, and has a slate roof. The building follows an L-shaped plan, with coped gables to the south and east, featuring bold kneelers. A long rear range faces the west end of the Church of St Nicholas.
The exterior is two storeys high, with stone, hollow-chamfered mullioned casement windows, some featuring label courses. The left gable is brought forward and displays a carved coat of arms on a diagonal ground above a three-light casement with a label. Below this is an octagonal bay with stone mullions and a crenellated top. A small window has been inserted to the right of the first-floor window, and the return to the right has a single light above a part-glazed door in a moulded four-centred head. The wing to the right contains a three-light window on each floor, with a label to the ground floor. The east gable, facing the church, has a small, louvred vent above three-light casements at each level. The rear range is of rubble construction with two- or three-light casements, and a central glazed door. Octagonal paired stacks are located to the left of the front of the main elevation, and at the rear of the right wing. Cast-iron ogee gutters are present at the eaves, supported by stone modillions with carved lion heads.
The interior, inspected only on the ground floor, has substantial late 19th or early 20th century detailing. This includes a stick baluster staircase with tapered newels, and doors with linenfold panelling. A room in the rear wing is fully panelled. Modifications have been made to accommodate institutional use, but many original features of good quality are retained.
