Description

Digby Estate consists of five 2-storey stone rubble cottages, located on the east side of Westbury, dating from the 18th century or earlier. The central three cottages had thatched roofs until the summer of 1971. The group is listed for its architectural significance and group value.

No. 255 features a plaintile roof, a 2-light window with small panes and leaded glazing on the first floor, and a modern 3-light, 3-tier window below it. To the left, there is a 6-flush-panelled door with a frame and lintel. Nos. 254 and 253 previously had thatched roofs and the same height. Each has a 2-light leafed window above; No. 254 has a Georgian shop window with 4 panes deep and 6 panes wide to the left and a ledged door to the right. No. 253 features a sash window and a ledged door on the ground floor.

No. 252 has a slightly higher frontage and was also formerly thatched. It has a 3-light modern casement window to the left and a 3-light leaded window to the right on the first floor, with a sash window and ledged door on the ground floor.

No. 251, which is 2 storeys with an attic and a much higher frontage, has one dormer. On the first floor, there is a 2-light segmental headed window with small panes, and a segmental headed sash window on the ground floor, next to a 6-flush-panelled door in a segmental headed doorway.

These cottages are situated in a significant location in relation to the Hospital of Saint John the Baptist and Evangelist and the entrance to Abbey Close. They form a group with several nearby buildings, including the Sherborne Do-it-Yourself Centre, Wessex Club, and others.
