Description
This is a row of four cottages dating to the 18th century, with later alterations. They are constructed of roughcast random rubble with varied rooflines. Most roofs have been renewed, except for that of the Church Hall cottage. The cottages present a continuous, flat façade to the street and are all single-storeyed, although of differing heights.
No. 1 has three four-pane sash windows with stone sills and lintels. A 20th-century addition to the left is not of particular architectural interest.
The Church Hall cottage is slightly taller and features a four-pane sash window and a boarded door. To its right is a 19th-century shop front with a boarded door and a low, eight-pane horizontal window set within an oak surround. It retains an old steeply-pitched pantiled roof. A 20th-century brick church hall is attached to the rear and is not considered to be of architectural significance.
No. 2 has a twelve-pane horizontal sliding sash window and a twelve-pane vertical sash window, both with stone sills and lintels. A 19th-century half-dormer window is also present.
No. 2A features a 20th-century glazed door under a broad lintel, and a four-pane sash window immediately below the eaves, with a stone sill and lintel.
The cottages occupy a prominent location on the northern approach to Hawthorn village and are listed for their contribution to the group value of the area.
