Description

Railton Yard comprises a row of four small cottages, likely dating to the late 18th or early 19th century, and built in two phases. The cottages have been recently restored and partly remodelled, now functioning as two cottages and two holiday flats. They are constructed of roughly-coursed mixed rubble with quoins, and have a stone slate roof.

The cottages are arranged on a north-south axis, facing east. Nos 1 and 2 were originally separate units but are now integrated into a single dwelling, with the ground floor of the former No 1 now used as garages, accessed through doors in the south gable wall. The former No 3 is now No 2 and has a double-fronted appearance. The exterior features two storeys and six windows, with a visible vertical joint between Nos 1 and 2, representing the original division between Nos 2 and 3. The doorway to the former No 1 has been partly blocked, replaced with an 8-pane sash window. The doorways to the former Nos 2 and 3 have stone lintels and renewed panelled doors, with renewed 16-pane sashes flanking them. Similar renewed 16-pane sashes are present at the first floor of all units.

Nos 3 and 4, formerly Nos 4 and 5, are set back on the north side, with a restored spinning gallery located at the first floor. This gallery is accessed by restored stone steps and has a roof supported by a large purlin. Each flat has a renewed doorway and window, with a long beam above the entrance to the flat at No 4. The interior of the cottages has not been inspected.

The spinning gallery is a unique survivor, representing a feature once common in both Sedbergh and Dent. The building forms a group with Nos 49 and 51 Main Street (Mitchell's Pharmacy) and No 53 Main Street (Marshall House). A recent addition at the north end is not part of this listed structure.
