Description
Former Mitchell's Pharmacy is a building located on Main Street in Sedbergh, likely dating from the mid to late 18th century. It has been remodeled into two integrated shops with a dwelling above, known as No. 6 Railton Yard. The building underwent further alterations in the late 19th century, with a shop front added in the 1920s. The exterior features a cast-iron, wood, and glass shop front, with scored stucco above and random rubble at the rear, topped by a slate roof.
The building is three storeys high with three symmetrical windows. The shop front includes panelled and fluted pilasters on either side, which end in fluted consoles with triangular pediments. A continuous sloped frieze with a modillioned cornice is supported by a free-standing cast-iron clustered column with a composite cap. Behind this, there are two recessed doorways with moulded pilaster jambs, Tudor-arched part-glazed doors, and plain overlights, flanked by convex plate-glass windows and large plate-glass windows at the front. The upper floors have sashed windows with sillbands; the first floor features 4-paned sashes, while the second floor has square 6-pane sashes. The top right corner shows part of a former banded pilaster and a kneeler.
At the rear, which faces Railton Yard, there are external steps leading to a doorway on the first floor of No. 6 Railton Yard, along with 4- and 12-pane sashed windows. Inside, the first floor of No. 6 Railton Yard has two lateral beams in the front room, C19 panelled doors, and a pitch-pine staircase.
