Description

This is a mid- to late 19th-century shop with living accommodation above, located on High Street, Ilfracombe. The building is constructed of stone rubble with dressed stone detailing. The roof is not visible from the street, and there is a red brick chimney on the right-hand side wall. It is four storeys high and three windows wide.

The ground floor features an arcade of eight octagonal cast-iron columns, partly fluted with enriched capitals. The arcade is largely boxed in, but two shouldered arches remain visible at the right-hand end. Rusticated pilasters flank the arcade, each finished with a tall, oblong block inlaid with coloured tiles, a foliated bracket, and a ball finial. Two shopfronts are behind the columns; they are well-preserved, although some elements have been boxed in. The display window to the right includes a transom light of coloured, leaded glass. The shop to the left has a glazed door with two solid, moulded panels at the bottom and a panelled reveal on the right-hand side. A four-panelled house door is at the left-hand end.

The upper storeys are characterised by raised quoins and bands separating the floors. The windows are two-light units with eccentrically tall, shouldered arches, and plain capitals to the centre piers. All windows are sash windows. A bracketed top cornice and parapet finishes the building.

The ground floor interior has been altered. The building is part of a notable group of commercial buildings on High Street, numbers 26-32, which together demonstrate remarkably ambitious architecture for a town of this size.
