Description

A pair of semi-detached houses built in the early 19th century in Ilfracombe. The houses have solid, rendered walls and slated roofs with red ridge tiles; the lean-to at number 11 has a corrugated-asbestos roof. Red brick chimneys with distinctive round red pots are visible on the left side walls, and a smaller chimney with a round pot is on the right-side wall of number 12.

The houses were probably designed with double-depth plans and are three storeys high, with a single-storey lean-to at each end. They have symmetrical three-window fronts. The ground floor is rusticated up to a moulded sill band on the second floor. Round-arched doorways are centrally positioned, with chamfered jambs and bar stops at the top. Number 12 retains its original six-panelled door and fanlight with radial bars. Sash windows are present throughout. Number 12 has barred sashes in all windows, while number 11 only has them in the two outer second-floor windows and the middle third-floor window. Most sashes contain six panes, except for the upper sashes in the third storey, which have three panes. A moulded board runs below the eaves. The lean-to at number 11 has been altered, with a small projection added to the front, whereas the original lean-to at number 12 retains the rustication and features two windows: a two-paned wood casement with a later ventilator above to the left, and a four-paned sash to the right. The interior of the properties was not inspected. The houses appear on an Ilfracombe Tithe Map from 1840, held at the Devon Record Office.
