Description
No. 32 High Street is a shop that originally included living accommodation upstairs, built in 1881 by W.H. Gould of Ilfracombe. It is designed in a High Victorian style. The building is constructed from yellow brick with red brick and stone dressings, while the left side wall is slate hung. The front roof is not visible from the street, and the rear wing has a slated roof. A red brick chimney is located on the left side wall.
The original plan features a layout that is one room wide and three rooms deep, with a staircase located behind the front room. The ground floor differs by having a deep shop with a staircase at the rear, which rises from the first floor only. The building has four storeys and is two windows wide. The ground floor has been altered in the late 20th century.
On the upper storeys, there is a pilaster strip on the left, red brick bands between the storeys, and sunk red brick panels flanking the windows. The windows on the third and fourth storeys are painted. The second storey features a single wide original canted bay window made of wood, with moulded shafts between the lights that support brackets developing into round arches. Above this is a moulded eaves-cornice and a slated pent roof. The third storey windows have 4-centred arches made of red brick and stone, along with continued moulded imposts of stone. The fourth storey windows have flat arches made of matching materials, linked by a band of red brick just below the modillioned eaves-cornice.
The interior has not been inspected. Nos. 26-27 and Nos. 29-32 form a notable mid-to-late Victorian group, showcasing later 19th-century commercial architecture that is remarkably ambitious for a town of this size. The building is included for its group value. Plans, sections, and elevation drawings for this building, then known as No. 27 High Street, were submitted to the Ilfracombe Local Board of Health on behalf of Mr. Hussell in 1881.
