Description
No. 28 High Street is a terraced house with a later shop, dating from the early 19th century. The building is rendered and has three storeys with two windows. The shopfront, which is a good example from the mid-19th century, features a central canted bay shop window supported by cast-iron columns with round-arched heads. This is flanked by recessed round-arched entrances, which are also surrounded by display cases, with the angled walls being bowed and supported by cast-iron columns. The shop door has a panel at the base and is glazed with a blocked fanlight, while the house door is a four-panelled design with a fanlight above. Both doors are set on black and white chequered pavements. Above the shopfront, there is a cornice topped by an early 19th-century cast-iron balcony at the first-floor level. The first floor features 15-pane hornless sash windows that originally had enriched Neo-Grecian hoods, while the second floor has 20th-century windows. The building has a parapet. The interior of the ground floor has been completely altered. All the listed buildings on High Street form a group.
