Description

No. 132 High Street is a late 19th-century shop with living accommodation above. The building features red brick dressed with stone and olive-green tiles, topped with a slated roof. A red brick chimney is located on the right-hand side wall, with stepped upper courses forming a cap.

The structure has three storeys and a garret, designed in the Flemish Renaissance style and is one window wide. The shopfront is of good quality, featuring angle shafts flanking the display window and a carved door head with a patterned fanlight above, topped by a tall wooden entablature.

On the second storey, there is a four-light, mullioned and transomed bow window made of stone, complete with a moulded sill and transom. This window has a deeply projecting top cornice supported by decorated iron brackets, finished with similar iron cresting. The lower lights of the window have plain sashes, while the transom lights consist of eight panes.

The third storey features a two-light window with round arches that spring from square pilasters. The window heads have patterned glazing. Below the window is a moulded sill with scrolls, and the window head is flanked by giant fluted consoles that rise to the top entablature, which has a dentilled cornice and a deep tiled frieze.

Pilasters in two stages support the entablature on either side of the front; the second storey pilasters are fluted and have carved brackets below and carved capitals above, both with eccentric designs. The triangular dormer gable is adorned with flanking scrolls and a shaped pediment, and the round-arched window features a moulded archivolt with exaggerated rustications, with the upper sash showcasing patterned glazing in a Geometric style. The interior has not been inspected.
