Description

This is a town house with a shop, dating from the early 19th century, located on Market Strand in Falmouth. The building is constructed of stucco or render, with panelled end pilasters and a bead and reel cornice beneath a deep eaves soffit. The roof is covered with asbestos slate, with a hip to the right-hand return, and dry slate to the half-hipped section. Brick stacks are located towards the front, with an external stack near the centre of the right-hand return, and a lateral stack at the rear. The building follows a double-depth plan and rises three storeys plus an attic, with a three-window front, including blind central windows. The original windows are 12-pane hornless sashes, although the glazing bars have been removed from the first-floor window on the right. The ground floor has a moulded entablature with a fascia over a late 20th-century shop front, extending around the right-hand return.. The right-hand return has a three-window range, and a tall, transomed, round-arched stair window with a spoked fanlight head and glazing bars towards the centre. Two-storey canted bays are situated on either side of the stair window, with late 19th-century horned sashes. Glazing bars are present in the narrower central bay of the canted bay, and to the upper window above an early 20th-century transomed oriel with a moulded cornice. A doorway with a moulded hood on consoles is located on the ground-floor right. Nineteenth-century attic sashes are also present. The interior of the shop has been altered in the 20th century; the remainder of the interior has not been inspected.
