Description

Ivy Cottage and Vine Cottage are a pair of cottages dating from around the 18th century. They have whitewashed rubble walls, an asbestos slate roof, and brick chimneys. The cottages are two storeys high with an asymmetrical six-window front.

Ivy Cottage has a 12-pane horizontal sliding sash window near the centre of the elevation, with an entrance to the right, and a recessed 19th-century panelled door. The first floor has two 16-pane centre-opening casement windows. A brick chimney is located on the north-west gable end, and there is a single-storey whitewashed extension with a corrugated roof on the same gable. A good 18th-century octagonal-panelled cupboard is found in the main reception room.

Vine Cottage features a 12-pane horizontal sliding sash window on the left and a 16-pane casement window on the right at ground floor level. A centrally placed, early 19th-century gabled porch has timber panelled sides and an asbestos sheet roof. The first floor has two 16-pane centrally opening casement windows. A lateral front chimney stack is on the left, and there’s a brick chimney stack on the right-hand gable end. The interior retains 18th-century joinery, including simple panelled screens to the central passage. A Cornish range is in the fireplace of the right-hand room, and there are Bowtell moulded ceiling beams. The first floor of both cottages was not inspected.
