Description

Thatchings is a pair of adjoining cottages dating from the 17th or 18th century. They are built with slatestone rubble walls and feature wheat reed thatched roofs, along with brick chimneys at the gable end and on the party wall. Each cottage has a two-room layout and a small 20th-century rear extension.

The cottages are two storeys high, with the south-west front of each displaying two windows and nearly central doorways. The left cottage has been painted and includes a 20th-century lean-to porch with a Delabole slate roof, a partly glazed planked door, and 20th-century metal casements in the original ground floor openings, as well as widened openings on the first floor, topped with eyebrowed thatch.

The right cottage is less altered, showcasing a mostly untouched stone front. It has a 20th-century lean-to porch with a window, a top glazed door, and a slate roof. To the left of the porch, there is a four-pane horned sash window in its original opening with a wooden lintel, while to the right, there is a 20th-century bow window in a widened opening. The first floor features 19th-century, 12-pane, two-light casements in their original openings. The eaves are straight.

Inside the right cottage, little alteration has occurred, and it retains bowtell moulded beams, muntin and plank pine partitions, and a recess in the back wall of the right room with a butterfly hinged door.
