Description
This is a barn and adjoining cartshed located approximately 75 metres west-southwest of Higher Porthmeor Farmhouse, dating from the early 19th century, with enlargements made in the early to mid-19th century. The structure is built of granite rubble with granite dressings and features a hipped scantle slate roof over the barn, while the cartshed has a lower gable-ended roof.
The building has a rectangular plan, with a granary above a shippon on the right side and external granite steps leading to a loading and winnowing doorway at the rear left. The cartshed, which is smaller and square, is attached to the left end and has a wide doorway at the rear. The ground slopes down at the front and left.
In terms of exterior features, the cartshed is single-storey on the left, while the barn is two-storey on the right. The southwest front has a wide doorway to the right of the middle and a winnowing doorway at the first floor on the left. The rear includes small windows at both ground and first floor (with the first-floor opening reduced), along with a doorway on the right side of the barn and at the top of the steps towards the right.
Inside, the barn retains its original floors and roof structures. This building is part of an unspoiled coastal hamlet situated within the ancient field system of this area of Cornwall.
