Barns At Approximately 20 Metres North East Of Tregerthen Farmhouse

The barns located approximately 20 metres northeast of Tregerthen Farmhouse are two adjoining structures, likely used as granaries or haylofts over shippons and a cartshed, with an adjoining range of stables or shippons and a cartshed. The eastern end dates from the early 19th century, while the rest is from the mid to late 19th century. They are built from granite rubble with granite dressings and feature grouted scantle slate roofs with gable ends, except for the half-hipped end of the original barn on the right. The overall layout is L-shaped, with the original rectangular barn on the left and a larger later barn on the right, which includes an integral single-storey wing at right angles in front of the right-hand end, serving as a cartshed. There are external steps behind the loading and winnowing doorways leading to the first floor of each barn, and an original horse trough is located against a short wall at the front left. The exterior is two storeys high, with the original barn on the left having one window on the lower floor and the later barn on the right featuring a tall two-window front. The left barn has a doorway to the right of the middle and a first-floor loading doorway towards the left. The later barn has a symmetrical arrangement of openings towards the left, with a central doorway on each floor and a deep single-storey wing at right angles in front on the right. The interior has not been inspected. These barns are part of an unspoiled coastal hamlet set within the ancient field system of this area of Cornwall.
