Description

Bosigran Smelting Works is a tin smelting house and associated structures, including a detached chimney, dating from the 18th and 19th centuries. The building is constructed from granite rubble with some granite dressings. It has a rectangular plan and is divided into two nearly square rooms. The smelting room, located at the higher end (west), contains the remains of a brick furnace and is connected to a detached round chimney (further west) by a horizontal flue. A leat runs under the flue and once powered a wheel that drove a bellows. The lower end of the building is older and may have originally housed a furnace but was later likely used for a bellows. Nearby, there are additional remains, including buddle pits. This site is one of the most complete examples of 19th century and earlier smelting works in Cornwall.
