Description
Lower Mill is a lead smelting mill located in Marrick, dating from the early 19th century, though it may be older. The building is constructed from rubble and has a rectangular plan, consisting of a single storey. It features quoins and projecting through-stones, with a segmental-headed doorway on the right and two segmental-headed windows on the right return. Inside, there are two segmental arches made of ashlar sandstone that supported reverberatory hearths. A flue from these hearths led up to the chimney, which is now part of Upper Mill. The interior also includes a bellows room behind the hearths and a wheel chamber for a waterwheel approximately 7 meters in diameter. This site was previously home to a smelting mill that was described as new in 1592. At the time of the re-survey, the mill was disused and in ruins. It is scheduled as an Ancient Monument.
