Description

MARRICK MARRICK SMELTING SE 09 NE MILLS 17/68 Lower Mill (Formerly listed as Marrick Lower 9.12.69 Mill (with flue) GV II Lead smelting mill. Apparently early C19, but may be earlier. Rubble. Main building of rectangular plan, single storey. Quoins and projecting through-stones. Segmental-headed doorway to right. 2 segmental-headed windows in right return. Interior: 2 segmental arches in ashlar sandstone for reverberatory hearths. From these a flue led up to the chimney now forming part of Upper Mill (qv). Bellows room behind the hearths, and wheelchamber for a waterwheel about 7 metres in dia- meter. On the site of a smelting mill described as new in 1592. (Arthur Raistrick, The Lead Industry of Wensleydale and Swaledale, 1975). Disused and in ruins at time of re-survey. Scheduled as an Ancient Monument.
