Description
Upper Mill is a lead smelting mill, possibly built in 1782, although it may be from a later date. The structure is made of rubble, primarily constructed using drystone techniques, and has a rectangular plan with a single storey. It features projecting through-stones and a flat-headed doorway. Inside, there are two segmental arches made of ashlar sandstone that support reverberatory hearths, from which a chimney rises. The chimney is large and rectangular in plan, with a brickwork section that indicates it has been heightened in two stages. Behind the chimney, there is a wheel chamber designed for a waterwheel that is approximately 7 metres in diameter. This site has been associated with a smelting mill that existed at least by 1782 and was built around the chimney of Lower Mill. At the time of the re-survey, the mill was disused and in ruins. It is scheduled as an Ancient Monument.
