Description

MARRICK MARRICK SMELTING SE 09 NE Mills 17/69 Upper Mill (Formerly listed as Marrick Upper 9.12.69 Mill (and chimney) GV II Lead smelting mill. Possibly 1782 but may be later. Rubble, largely of drystone construction. Rectangular in plan, single storey. Projecting through-stones. Flat-headed doorway. Interior: 2 segmental arches in ashlar sandstone for rever- beratory hearths, from which rises a chimney. This is in plan a large rectangle, and has a section in brickwork, indicating 2 stages of heightening. There is a wheelchamber behind the chimney for a waterwheel about 7 metres in diameter. One the site of a smelting mill in existence at least by 1782, built around the chimney of Lower Mill (qv). (Arthur Raistrick, The Lead Industry of Wensleydale and Swaledale, 1975). Disused and in ruins at time of re-survey. Scheduled as an Ancient Monument.
