Description
Hutton's Monument is a memorial built around 1814 to commemorate Sir Matthew Hutton. It is made of sandstone ashlar and features a square-plan obelisk that stands on a dado with corner buttresses and a cornice, all resting on a square base with a torus cornice. On the south side of the obelisk, there is a panel with a Latin inscription honoring Sir Matthew Hutton of Macclesfield, who passed away on December 12, 1814, at the age of 35. He had requested to be buried at this location, which is just under 1,000 feet above sea level and was his favorite viewpoint on the family's Marske estate. The obelisk is enclosed by a railed area that includes a low wall with chamfered coping and square gate piers topped with pyramidal caps. The wrought-iron railings and matching gate were replaced in the 1930s.
