Description
The Old Rectory is a parsonage house, later used as a residence, built in 1753 with subsequent additions. It was commissioned for John Hutton of Marske. The building is constructed of coursed rubble sandstone with stone slate roofs. It has two storeys and a three-bay main section flanked by a one-bay section to the left and a projecting section to the right. The central part of the main house features a part-glazed three-panel door set within a chamfered ashlar architrave with bases. Sash windows with ashlar surrounds and four panes on the first floor are also present. An eaves band runs along the top, and there is shaped kneeler detail and ashlar coping to the left, alongside an end stack. The lower bay to the left has quoins and four-pane sash windows on each floor. An early 19th century addition projects to the right, distinguished by quoins, a canted bay window on the ground floor, sash windows above, ashlar coping, and brick end stacks. The rear of the main house has small ground-floor windows and first-floor sash windows with glazing bars. A 19th-century return on the left side features a part-glazed door in a 20th-century classical wooden surround, while the right return has a four-panel door with a two-pane overlight, also in a 20th-century classical wooden surround. Parish records indicate the parsonage was built in 1753 at a cost of £135. The addition to the right was built by the curate, Mr. Hicks, to house boarders he taught in preparation for Richmond School. The headmaster of Richmond School, Reverend James Tate (Rector of Marske 1808-1833), is noted in connection with this arrangement.
