MARSKE MARSKE Gateway at Marske Hall

GV II

Gates and gateway. c1835. Ashlar sandstone gateway, wrought-iron gates. Double gates to carriage drive, flanked by single pedestrian gates, all with square bars, with spear finials to carriage gates, all with interlocking circles in low mid rail and adjoining circles in high mid rail. Pedestrian gates within round-arched openings with banded rustication to pilasters with imposts and open pediments. Erected when the carriage drive through an arcade of lime trees was interrupted by a new road linking Marske with the Richmond-Reeth turnpike road, authorized in 1836.
