Description

The gateway at Marske Hall, dating from around 1835, is made of ashlar sandstone and features wrought-iron gates. It consists of double gates for the carriage drive, flanked by single pedestrian gates. All gates have square bars and spear finials on the carriage gates, with interlocking circles in the low mid rail and adjoining circles in the high mid rail. The pedestrian gates are set within round-arched openings, which are accented by banded rustication on the pilasters, complete with imposts and open pediments. This gateway was constructed when the carriage drive, which was lined with lime trees, was interrupted by a new road that connected Marske to the Richmond-Reeth turnpike road, a change that was authorized in 1836.
