Description
The Gothic Barn at Marske Hall is a cow byre and hay barn, likely built in the early 19th century, possibly for John Hutton. It features rubble construction with stone slate roofs and has a T-shaped plan, consisting of a two-storey, five-bay southeast range and a three-bay rear wing. The southeast elevation showcases a central pointed-arched barn opening with a blind ashlar quatrefoil above it. On the ground floor, there are two pointed-arched doorways with board doors and remnants of crude Gothick tracery in the fanlights above, along with two vents (one blocked) in between. The first floor has a series of slit vents arranged in a pattern of 1:2:2:2:2:1. To the left, there is a castellated parapet, while the right side has ashlar coping. The rear of the wing features a pointed-arched barn opening with an ashlar quatrefoil above, flanked by a slit vent on each floor and a castellated gable. The left and right returns of the rear wing have pointed-arched openings with recessed blocking, accompanied by two ground-floor and three first-floor slit vents. Inside, the barn has king-post roof trusses. This building is notably large for an agricultural structure in the area and is positioned to serve as a prominent landmark.
