Description

This is a roofless house located in Zennor, likely dating from the 18th century, though it may be older. It is constructed from granite moorstone rubble and was probably originally topped with a thatched roof. The doorway features granite monolithic jambstones. The house likely started as a single storey structure with two shallow-depth rooms separated by a stone wall. The left-hand (north) room is situated on lower ground and includes a later-added fireplace at the left end; it was presumably heated by an open hearth against the middle wall in its original state. There is an original doorway to the left of the middle of the front wall of this lower room, along with a small window opening in the rear wall towards the right. The other room does not have a fireplace or window openings, and its doorway is located at the front of the party wall. This house, along with a nearby similar house, resembles the 'black houses' of Scotland and represents a building type that is nearly unknown in Cornwall.
