Description

The Cottage is a small house dating from the early 18th century, constructed of granite rubble with partly dressed granite moorstone quoins, jambstones, and lintels, featuring slate sills. The roof, originally thatched, is now covered with asbestos slate and has granite chimneys at both gable ends, with the right-hand chimney raised in brick. The house has a two-room layout, with a wider hall/kitchen on the left and a parlour on the right, separated by a lobby and a straight flight stair.

In the 19th century, a lean-to was added at the rear, which has since been replaced with a new lean-to in 1986. Inside, the kitchen includes a large fireplace with a bread oven and fringle, while the parlour features a 19th-century stone fireplace built in front of the original fireplace. There is a blocked doorway in the front wall near the kitchen fireplace, suggesting that the house may have served as a village bakehouse.

The building is two storeys high, with a slightly irregular three-window west front, a doorway, and a window positioned slightly to the right of the middle. The left-hand ground floor window is close to the doorway, and there is a blocked doorway further to the left. A glazed porch from the early 20th century is located in front of the main doorway, which has a 20th-century door. The windows are 6-pane horned sashes, which are copies of the late 19th-century sashes that were replaced. Most of the carpentry and joinery inside was replaced in 1986, although some 19th-century beams have been retained. The kitchen fireplace opening is supported by a thick oak lintel.
