Description

Lower Porthmeor Farmhouse, along with its rear courtyard walls and front garden walls, dates from around 1800. The farmhouse features a granite ashlar front, while the rest is constructed from granite rubble with granite dressings. The front and rear wing have a slurried scantle slate roof, and the rear is covered with corrugated asbestos. Brick chimneys are located at the gable ends, and there is an external stone lateral stack on the left side of the rear wing.

The farmhouse has a two-room plan, with a larger kitchen on the left and a parlour on the right, connected by a cross passage that leads to the stairs. There is a two-storey, one-room plan dairy with an apple loft at right angles to the rear left, and a lean-to at the rear right. The apple loft can be accessed by an external flight of steps that adjoins the high rear courtyard walls. An additional outbuilding is attached to the right side.

The exterior is two storeys high and features a nearly symmetrical three-window front facing southeast. The windows and doorway are positioned towards the right, with the doorway centrally located within the fenestration. The ground floor openings are slightly wider, and there is a 20th-century door with an overlight. The windows are late 19th-century horned sashes.

Inside, the farmhouse is fairly complete and unaltered, retaining original stairs and floor partitions. Notable features include a chimney-piece with a dentilled cornice in the first-floor right-hand room, which includes a late 19th-century horseshoe grate. The rectangular front garden is enclosed by a granite moorstone wall with monolithic gate piers. The rear left wing is built over a wall of coursed masonry that extends northwest, forming the lower boundary of the farmyard. This property is part of an unspoiled coastal hamlet set within the ancient field system of this area of Cornwall.
